Organic wine

Organic wine is not a trend, but an attitude to life. It starts with the winegrower, who pays meticulous attention to sustainability, organic fertilisers and pesticides, as well as the protection of the environment, climate and biodiversity. It ends with the consumer, who appreciates and enjoys the high-quality product. These farms have also fully convinced us.

More Information

Organic wines can do much more: The harvest quantities of organic vines are much smaller than those of conventionally cultivated vines. And low harvest quantities are the most important criterion for high-quality wines. Organic wine also tastes more individual. Firstly, because many additives are prohibited in organic wines. And secondly, because you don't have to go for mainstream tastes with small quantities of wine. Wine lovers who appreciate unique and high-quality wines are therefore in the right place with organic wines. In our assortment you will find organic wine from South Africa and Portugal. Try it!

Bio wine – what exactly makes the difference?

The quantity makes the difference. It is important to know that commercially successful conventional wines are produced in large quantities. In order to be able to produce large quantities of a wine with consistent quality and a similar taste, biological processes are necessary. Organic wines are a natural product where a distinctive, unique taste is the hallmark of quality. And organic wines are naturally good for our environment and thus for our health.

When can a wine be called organic?

The EU organic label is awarded to a wine when it meets certain criteria. In organic viticulture, for example, the winemaker takes care to preserve and promote the vineyard ecosystem. He uses robust grape varieties and suitable seedlings to ward off pests and improve the quality of the soil. Pesticides and genetic engineering are taboo in organic viticulture. The organic winegrower also does not use synthetic fertilisers; only selected organic and mineral fertilisers such as plant compost and rock flour are permitted. In individual cases, copper-containing pesticides are permitted in organic winegrowing to combat fungal diseases and downy mildew.

Less sulphur in organic wines

In order to receive the EU organic seal, 95 percent of the grapes in an organic wine must be organic grapes. The organic wine must also contain less sulphur than conventional. In the spirit of sustainability, organic wine should also have acork closure. However, compared to less sustainable closures such as a metal screw cap or crown cork, a cork closure results in a higher wine loss.

Higher standards for organic wines are often not visible

Some organic wine producers go beyond the regulations of the organic label on their own initiative. They also reduce their water and energy consumption, lower their CO2 emissions and promote the biodiversity of their respective regional cultural landscapes. However, these higher standards produced under the EU organic label are not made visible by the label. Here it is up to the consumer to find out more about organic wineries and their production methods.

The most important seals for organic wines

As with organic food, there are also other special seals for organic wine production beyond the EU organic seal, for which other criteria are important: For biodynamic wine, for example, value is placed on a circular economy within the farm. This is what the Demeter seal stands for. Wineries with the „Fair’n Green“seal pay attention to holistic sustainability in procurement, viticulture, cellar management and sales. In the case of „FairChoice“organic wines, öecological, öeconomic and social aspects are important to the wineries.

Biowein – was genau macht den Unterschied?

Weniger Schwefel in Bioweinen
