The history of the historic farm dates back to the early 17th century and boasts a 300-year-old winemaking tradition.
Owner Julian Johnsen grew up in England, where he graduated from the Royal Agricultural College with a degree in agriculture. In his last year of studies he spent a year in South Africa on a wine farm in the Cape Winelands. It is not surprising to hear that he immediately fell in love with the breathtaking scenery and was completely enchanted by the mystical nature of viticulture and winemaking. In 2001 he acquired the historic Vondeling Wine Farm.
What finally attracted him to the Voor-Paardeberg wine growing area is the perfect mix of complex granite-based soil with just the right amount of clay for dry growing.
Paarl-born winemaker Matthew Copeland studied at South Africa's famous "Elsenburg Agricultural College", where he graduated with distinction. Matthew gained invaluable experience in the top wine-growing regions of Switzerland, France, California, Australia and New Zealand - experience that has undoubtedly contributed to the great success of Vondeling wines.
