When it was founded in 1696, the 160 hectare estate was one of the first wineries in the Cape and can today look back on a long and proud tradition of winegrowing. Vergenoegd's distinctive wines are an excellent expression of the estate's favourable vineyard location, centuries of expertise and modern cultivation and winemaking methods. On 70 hectares of land, the estate's vineyards, cooled by fresh sea breezes, produce red varieties such as Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. For many consecutive years, Vergenoegd's wines have been awarded prestigious prizes and recognitions for their superior quality and elegance. But Vergenoegd is not only famous for its excellent wines beyond the borders of South Africa, but also for its cute and worldwide unique "Duck Parade". This duck parade, consisting of more than 1100 Indian running ducks, forms the landmark of Vergenoegd and enchants guests from all over the world three times a day with a guided waddle through the estate. However, this large flock of ducks is certainly not only for the entertainment of the guests. Every morning, the ducks patrol the vineyards and rid the vines and vine leaves of snails and pests, making the use of chemical pesticides completely unnecessary. Vergenoegd is proud to be one of Africa's first pioneers in holistic pest control and makes a valuable contribution to nature, which benefits not only the preservation of our fragile ecosystems but also wine consumers.
