Weingut Val du Charron - Erlesene Weine aus Wellington, Südafrika

Val du Charron
Val du Charron

The 45 hectare Val du Charron Winery in Wellington, South Africa, is located in the historic Bovlei Valley, where, under the direction of winemaker Hugo Truter, the winery's award-winning portfolio of wines is created. The Estate Range includes varietal wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Gris, Syrah and Chardonnay, while the Theater of Wine range includes Black Countess, Erasmus and Four White Legs.

For Hugo Truter, the philosophy of winemaking is simple: ripe fruit, a gentle treatment and attention to detail. With a motivated team like the one found at Val du Charron, passion, patience and time-honored fundamentals, he has found his dream job. He was drawn to Val du Charron after working at Kanonkop Estate for many years. "I love the freedom of being able to express myself through making wine, because there are so many different styles you can create."

The history of the winery dates back to its establishment in 1699 and is now run by the sixth generation of the Entwistle family. When the Entwistles purchased the farm, they found a rather sad and half-decayed fruit farm, but one that had enormous potential, great cultural significance and a breathtaking panoramic view. They named the farm "Val du Charron" as a tribute to its rich and colourful history.

Translated from French, the name means "Valley of the Wagonmakers", which was also the original name of the Wellington Valley. The French influence stems from the Huguenots, who settled in the area at the beginning of the 18th century, while the reference to wagon making refers to the fact that Wellington was the last place at that time, where the Boers' ox carts could be serviced or repaired before heading into the unknown hinterland via the majestic Bainskloof Gorge.

The acquisition of the farm marked the beginning of a five-year restoration period of the historic buildings, the planting and establishment of new vineyards and olive groves and, ultimately, the revival of the farm's winemaking tradition. Since 2012, all wines under the Val du Charron label have been produced from the farm's own vines and are produced, as well as bottled, on the estate. Thus the wines of Val du Charron are a pure and authentic expression of this historical and distinctive terroir.
