Weingut Sijnn - Spitzen Weine aus Malgas, Südafrika
This small vineyard of just 16 hectares of land under vine is the only winery in the Malgas district and is known for producing first-class wines with interesting and unusual grape varieties. In an area where fox and hare say goodnight, the winery is a pioneer in its field, and today, with none other than winemaker David Trafford, it can boast even the most highly prized wines, which are regularly awarded the most prestigious prizes and awards. The portfolio currently includes the first-class Sijnn Syrah, the Sjinn Touriga Nacional as well as the Sijnn White - top wines of a very special character!
Malgas is simply a spectacular location with a view of the Potberg and its breeding Cape Vultures, as well as an impressive view of the Breede River, which was once given the Khoisan name "Seijnn" by the ancient natives of this area.
When Rita and David Trafford first visited the village of Malgas in the Overberg region of the Western Cape in 2000, they were so impressed by the incredible soil conditions that they immediately set out to find suitable land for growing wine.
The complex and stony soil combined with a warm and dry climate, tempered by constant sea breezes, offers an ideal terroir for the creation of very special wines. The soils consist of 85% stone with 600 mm deep, round pudding stones on the surface and slate in the subsoil. Touriga Nacional vines, however, are planted on pure slate. All the vines are grown here as bush vines because of their remarkably low yield and low vigour.
These extremely lean and complex soils favour a deep root system, low growth and low harvest yields. Conditions that produce intense and complex wines of unbeatable individual character.
On Sijnn everything is done by hand - not only is the pruning and care of the vines done by hand, but also the harvesting and sorting of the berries is done by hand. Winemaker and architect David Trafford has more than 20 years of experience with his top quality, highly endowed and naturally produced wines from his De Trafford Winery. Since 2000 he has also been a member of the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild.
