Quinta do Noval - Renommiertes Weingut in Portugals Douro Region

The Quinta do Noval in the heart of the Cima Corgo near the town of Pinhao is spectacularly situated and is one of the most famous wineries in the Portuguese Douro Valley. Since the beginning of the 18th century, grapes for the best ports and outstanding red wines have been cultivated on the wide slate terraces around the Quinta do Noval. At the latest since the legendary 1931 vintage port, the Quinta do Noval has been one of the best port wine producers in Portugal.

Today, the fortunes of the winery are managed by Christian Seely, who is responsible for the high quality standards of the wines at the winery. The technical director António Agrellos is responsible for the development of the excellent port and red wines. The winery's extremely talented team also includes the oenologists Ausenda Matos, Adalberto Ferreira. Together, they lead the goal of successfully continuing the long tradition and philosophy of Quinta do Noval.
The cornerstone for the successful wine production was laid in 1894 by the then owners, Antonio José da Silva and Luis de Vasconcellos. They developed the wide, slightly sloping terraces for which the entire Douro region is famous today. The terraces ensure even sunlight in all rows of vines, thus ensuring excellent quality of the grapes.
On the Quinta do Nova, they have terraces of around 145 hectares of vineyards planted with autochthonous, i.e. indigenous grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa or Tinta Barroca. The particularly old vines are used for port wine production, some of which date back to the time before the phylloxera catastrophe in 1868 and still produce high-quality grapes today. They grow in specially selected locations and are only used for wine production in the best years.
There is another special feature of the Quinta do Noval. The port wine is not brought to Porto to mature as usual. In order that the port wine can stay on the spot, special cellars were partly driven into a mountain slope on the winery. There, the port can develop into a truly ingenious drop away from the summer temperatures.

The partly slaty soils, extreme climatic conditions and a careful vinification in the cellar also result in a very special red wine. Powerful tannins, a deep dark colour, a lot of spice, a touch of herbal notes and a cool berry aroma make it stand out. The wines are very structured and complex, yet elegant, velvety and fruity. And they have brilliant ripening potential!
