Quinta da Gaivosa - Prämiertes Douro Weingut, Portugal
The Quinta da Gaivosa winery cultivates 25 hectares of slate soil with typical red Douro grape varieties such as Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and the white varieties Malvasia Fina, Codega, Gouveio, Rabigato and Viosinho. Some of the vines are proudly over 60 years old. The award-winning portfolio of father and son Alves and Tiago de Sousa in collaboration with star oenologist Anselmo Mendes includes the Quinta da Gaivosa (red), the Branco da Gaivosa, the Reserva Pessoal Alves de Sousa Tinto and the Reserva Pessoal Alves de Sousa Branco.
The production of wines has always been a family tradition for Domingo's Alves de Sousa. His father and grandfather were wine growers in the Douro region. However, contrary to all expectations, Domingos Alves de Sousa initially took a different career path and studied civil engineering. However, in 1987, after finishing his studies, he returned to the vineyards of the five family-owned Quintas. After numerous and extensive studies and courses in viticulture and oenology in Portugal and Bordeaux, he put together his highly qualified team and built the state-of-the-art winery on the Quinta da Gaivosa. This was the final step to start the production of wine from the own grapes of the five family Quintas.
Since then, Domingo's Alves de Sousas wines have been known worldwide for years for their excellent and first-class quality and are regularly awarded prestigious prizes and recognitions. In 1999, he received the "Revista de Vinhos" award, probably the most coveted among Portuguese oenologists, for "Producer of the Year". Success all along the way!
