Neil Ellis & Werner Meyer Näkel - Top Weingut in Stellenbosch, Südafrika
The winery, Meyer-Näkel was founded in 1950. The success in wine extends far beyond the borders of the Ahr valley! When the talented winemaker Werner Näkel visited South Africa for the first time in the mid-90s, he was immediately fascinated by the overwhelming beauty of the Stellenbosch region and decided to produce his own wine here one day. In 1998 he started the collaboration Neil Ellis Meyer-Näkel with his friend Neil Ellis in Stellenbosch.
Werner Näkel's South African portfolio includes the award-winning wines "Us de Kap" Chardonnay, the "Us De Kap" Shiraz, the Z- Cabernet Sauvignon and the Zwalu, a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. In South Africa the Näkels have specialized in the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz. All of these grape varieties, with their deep dark colour and pronounced tannin structure, produce a completely different wine type than their Pinot Noir from the Ahr. In addition, these are grape varieties that would not easily grow in Germany due to climatic conditions. All this makes working in South Africa and these wines so exciting for Werner Näkel!
