Nabygelegen Private Cellar - Erfolggekröntes Weingut in Wellington, Südafrika
The history of the historic Boutique Winery, Nabygelegen in Wellington, South Africa, dates back to 1712, when the land was granted to Jan Lorenz from Rostock as a new citizen of the Cape. It is assumed that the name "Nabygelegen" (Dutch for nearby) has its origin in the fact that Jan Lorenz's entire family lived "close by". Nabygelegen's owner and cellar master, James McKenzie, now produces award-winning and internationally acclaimed wines from vines up to 75 years old on the 35 hectare wine farm, 22 of which are planted with vines. From varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Tempranillo as well as Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Verdelho and Semillon, wines such as the highly endowed Nabygelgen 1712, the Nabygelgen Scaramanga White and the Naybygelgen Merlot are produced here.
James McKenzie's motto: "Top class wines need their time" promises success all along the line! Small production quantities of concentrated wines, which present a unique reflection of the Wellington terroir.
In addition to the centuries-old history of wine production, it is also interesting to note that the farm's land has been inhabited and cultivated by Bushmen and prehistoric Iron Age settlements. The lush green and fertile valley with its strong flowing river attracted people thousands of years ago. Even today, in the red and deep earth of the vineyards, the team from Nabygelegen finds Stone Age tools and fist wedges with an estimated age of over a million years. So in every sip of wine there is a small part of the history of mankind that began in Africa.
