Lammershoek Winery - Prämiertes Weingut im Swartland, Südafrika

Lammershoek
Lammershoek

The Lammershoek Winery is located in South Africa's Swartland Region in the Aprilskloof Valley of the Paardeberg about 80 km from Cape Town. Among its German owners - the consortium includes world famous football veteran and legend Franz Beckenbauer - Lammershoek has secured a very special place among Swartland's renowned and award-winning wineries. Under the oenological direction of Charl van Rheenen and winemaker Schalk Opperman, highly endowed and award-winning Swartland wines are produced here, which are offered under the lifestyle series The Innocent Range, the experimental Mysteries Range, the exciting and dynamic Reserve Range and the Libero No.5 and are primarily pressed from classic grape varieties such as Chradonnay, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Syrah, Mourvedre and Pinotage.

Lammershoek was family-owned for many years and was taken over by a small group of investors led by football legend Franz Beckenbauer in 2013 - a new management team was appointed at the beginning of 2015.

The name of the Lammershoek Winery, which translates as "Lammershoek", has its origins in the legend that ewes with their young lambs once sought shelter from birds of prey here in the forest surrounding the estate, especially the rock eagle, also known as the "Lammervanger" in the Swartland area.

Lammershoek's vineyards cover a total area of 80 ha, which is cultivated as naturally as possible, mainly in dry farming (without artificial irrigation). The soil of the Paardeberg is predominantly granite and the terroir and the unique climate of this location offer exceptionally favourable conditions for the cultivation of classically noble grape varieties. The grapes grown here produce top quality wines, which are consistently awarded prestigious prizes and recognitions worldwide.

The nutrient-poor soils of the Lammershoek vineyards are without question a challenge to be met with a great deal of know-how. The low rainfall only allows for extremely low yields and smaller grapes, but with significantly more intense flavour nuances - in keeping with the motto: small but powerful! The cold and wet winters as well as the dry and hot summers provide the Paardeberg area with a classic Mediterranean climate at an approximate altitude of 80 m - 300 m above sea level.

Lammershoek wines are characterised by their unadulterated and pure character and spoil you with a pleasant natural acidity, which is so popular and typical for the Swartland region. The quality of these highly remunerated Swartland wines speaks volumes and finds its origin in the minimalist production process of the winery, whereby interventions in the natural vinification process are kept to a minimum and organic winegrowing methods rely on natural pest control. This approach remains true to the original roots and principles of Lammershoek as one of the oldest wineries in Swartland.
