Indlovu Original Gin

To produce the gin, IBHU collects fresh dung from naturally foraging elephants, which is processed through the following five stages of production: Collecting, Sterilizing, Rinsing, Drying, Storing. The collected dung is dried, crushed and then immersed in a sterilizing liquid that kills 99.9% of bacteria, fungi, spores and viruses, according to a method prescribed in South Africa for the sterilization of grey water/ borehole water for human consumption. The sterilized manure is thoroughly rinsed, dried and stored in breathable bags until use. There are numerous studies that show that an alcohol solution between 40 - 70% is very effective at killing bacteria. Therefore, the direct infusion of the manure serves as an additional step in the purification process. During the bottling process, the gin passes through a micro-filter and finally a sample is sent for laboratory analysis to ensure that it meets the strict standards for drinkability.
