Grangehurst - Preisgekröntes Weingut in Stellenbosch, Südafrika
Grangehurst Winery was acquired in 1973 by winemaker Jeremy Walker's parents, who had emigrated from England to Cape Town in 1952. After 20 years in the city they decided to move to the rural area of Stellenbosch and gave the small farm, their new home, the name "Grangehurst". This name came from the place "The Grange" in Birmingham where Betty Walker spent her childhood and "Hurst Close" was the name of the street in London where Eddie Walker grew up as a child. Coincidentally, "grange" means "a country house with farm buildings" and "hurst" means "on a hill" - a very apt description of Grangehurst. In the same year of moving to the farm, Jeremy began his studies of viticulture and oenology at the University of Stellenbosch.
His first vintage was awarded the title "Champion Wine" at the "South African Young Wine Show" - an absolute dream start for the small red wine cellar. From this 1992 maiden vintage, Grangehurst developed from a rather "commercial hobby" to a highly qualified, fully equipped winery. Today Grangehurst shines with a large number of awards and meaningful honours and has followers all over the world!
