Weingut DeWaal Wines - Preisgekrönte Weine aus Stellenbosch, Südafrika
De Waal is a historical family legacy that can boast nine generations of passionate wine farmers. The main focus of the estate has always been to delight its customers with unique wines. More than two centuries ago, this historic Cape Dutch homestead dating from 1791 was the last outpost on the road between Cape Town and Stellenbosch. De Waal wines are produced on the Uiterwyk farm, which in Afrikaans means outpost or base. Chris, Pieter and Daniel de Waal are the ninth generation of the family to be involved in wine production in South Africa. Daniel and Chris are the winemakers, with Daniel responsible for the red wines and Pieter for the white wines. Daniel did not always want to become a winemaker. He was the youngest of the three de Waal brothers, the fifth generation who farmed Uiterwyk and the ninth generation who call South Africa home. Brother Chris was involved in wine production on the family estate Stellenboschkloof from an early age, Pieter was involved in marketing and sales and Daniel wanted to farm exclusively. After graduating in viticulture from the University of Stellenbosch, Daniel visited Château Angelus in France's St-Emilion region, and it was only through this visit that his life was to take a different course. With its mountainous terrain, good rainfall, deep and well-drained soils, and a variety of terroirs, De Waal wines combine the old world finesse with the lush fruit notes of the new world wines and are available in a limited edition only. The wines are available in specialist wine shops, gourmet restaurants, and on the farm itself. The Reserve range includes Top of the Hill Pinotage, Signal Rock, Cabernet Sauvignon and CT de Waal Pinotage. The Black Label range includes Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Merlot. The Young Vines range offers quality wines at a fair price and is intended for everyday enjoyment, but without compromising on handcrafted quality. This range includes a Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Chenin Blanc, Merlot and a Shiraz. De Waals ripe vineyards produce grapes that produce deep and rich wines known for consistent quality and great enjoyment. The DeWaal family was one of the first families in South Africa to produce Pinotage when C.T. De Waal produced an experimental edition during his apprenticeship at Elsenburg University in Stellenbosch in 1941. The 50-year-old Top-of-the-Hill vineyard (2 ha of bush vines) is one of South Africa's oldest vineyards.
