The Sustainability of South African Wines
The wine country Südafrika is one of the leading wine nations in terms of sustainability. Since the harvest in 2000, about 95 % of the grapes have been produced according to the guidelines of the Intergrated Production of Wine (IPW). In the meantime, the IPW programme has become a modern comprehensive management programme for wine producers that complies with the global sustainability standards of the international wine organisations FIVS and OIV. Südafrica's wine industry has recognised the need to protect the environment early on and invested in research and development. At the same time, the official control systems have been optimised to provide customers with confidence-building insight into the process from vine to bottle. With the introduction of the new Sustainable Wines of South Africa label, South Africa's winemakers guarantee certified sustainable wine production in harmony with nature.
Seal of Origin for Wines from South Africa
South Africa's wine production has been subject to strict wine controls mandated by the Department of Agriculture since 1973. The Wines of Origin (W. O.) South Africa seal of guarantee is awarded exclusively to original vintage labels and confirms the accuracy of the origin, vintage and grape variety. With the 2010 vintage, Südafrica's wine producers can also show their sustainable commitment on the bottle. The existing W.O. - Seal has been extended to include a larger alternative and is only awarded by the Wine of Spirit Board if IPW accreditation has been successfully verified. Compliance with measures for the protection of biodiversity is also taken into account. The seal thus officially guarantees sustainable operations along the entire value chain. Buyers and consumers can gain insight by entering the seal number on the website of Sustainable Wines South Africa: www.swsa.co.za. Noteworthy: South Africa's commitment to sustainability is voluntary. At the same time, the winemakers are convinced that only independent controls and transparency can make the credibility of Sustainable Wines of South Africa a reality.
