Casa Ferreirinha is part of the family-run company Sogrape Vinhos, one of the most important Portuguese wine producers, which is focused on export and the international market. The Barca Velha is one of the biggest wines of Portugal and a rarity of the Douro region. It is undoubtedly Casa Ferreirinha's flagship wine, whose long history began in late 1952 and around which many myths have grown. Due to the extremely high-quality standards, no more than 17 editions of this wine have been published to date.

In earlier times, when there were neither established roads, nor electricity in the Douro region, blocks of ice were brought to the region on donkeys to cool the wooden barrels in the wine cellar.
