Porto Cálem is probably one of the most famous trademarks for port wine. The name Porto Cálem is well known to almost every family in Portugal as the market leader, especially through its Velhoetes Tawny, Ruby and White ranges.
Founded in 1859 by António Alves Cálem, at that time, Porto Cálem only had a fleet of its own dedicated to exporting wine to Brazil, in exchange for exotic wood. Even today, the company logo of the world-famous Porthaus reminds us of this proud history, by depicting a traditional caravel. Porto Cálem has been family-owned for more than four generations, with constant development of the Port-company and steadily growing recognition at international level. Porto Cálem's main market has always been Portugal, although the export of fine wines has always played an important role in the company's history.
Since 1998, Porto Cálem has been part of the Sogevinus SGPS, S.A. group. Sogevinus is responsible for a large number of companies dedicated to the production and trade of Port Wine and D.O.C. wines of the Douro region. The group also invests in the vineyards themselves to guarantee high quality standards of the wines produced.
Porto Cálem's portfolio has been awarded a remarkable number of prizes and recognitions throughout its history, especially for its premium vintages, Late Bottled Vintages and Aged Tawnys. Porto Cálem's first vintage port was the Vintage Port 1870, which won first place in 1897 in the form of medals from Bordeaux, Marseilles and Brussels.
Since then, Porto Cálem's wines have regularly received prestigious awards at international wine competitions in Portugal, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, USA and Japan. Success all along the line!
