Barbosa & Filhos - Preisgekröntes Weingut in Portugals Alentejo-Region
From the region's typical grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Afrocheiro, Aragonez, Tinta Barroca, Alicante Bouschet, Trincadeira and Fernão Pires, winemaker João M. Barbosa creates award-winning and distinctive Alentejo wines here, which have gained a solid reputation over a very short time. The Rhône variety Syrah as well as the noble variety Sauvignon Blanc are also used here in the creation of first-class wines.
Sociedade Agrícola João Teodósio Matos Barbosa & Filhos, Lda is a family business founded in 1997. The first vines were planted in 1999 at the Valle de Junco winery in Esperanςa, Portalegre, and the first wines were launched 6 years later in 2005.
Later, a second vineyard was purchased and planted in the foothills of the Serra d'Aire e Candeeiros Nature Reserve. At the same time, two wineries were also built in Esperanςa and in Rio Maior and have been in operation since 2007.
The grapes for Barbosa & Filho's award-winning wines thrive at an altitude of between 330 and 385 metres. The winery has been designed in a way that allows minimal interference with the natural wine production process - for example, Barbosa & Filhos completely dispenses with the use of pumps.
The vineyards are located in a valley protected by the Serra de São Mamede mountain range. This location offers unique conditions for wine growing due to its soil and climate. On land, protected by the Serra de S. Mamede Nature Reserve and containing prehistoric cave paintings, the beauty of the Alentejo region shines in all its glory.
