Anselmo Mendes comes from the small town of Monção in the north of Portugal, where he continued the many generations old family tradition of passionate winegrowing. His passion for agriculture and wine led him to study at the "Instituto Superior de Agronomia" in Lisbon, where he graduated in 1987. During his studies his love for wine grew more and more. Two of his teachers, Pedro Belchior and Virgílio Loureiro, were important key figures in his further career.

After a position at the "Comissão de Viticultura Regional dos Vinhos Verdes" - C.V.R.V.V. he worked for the "Sociedade dos Vinhos Borges" in 1988. At that time there was no oenologist directly responsible for the production of Borges wines. Here he was able to gain invaluable experience and improve his production methods, taking them to a higher level. Borges is a world-class Portuguese wine producer, famous for its Port wines, brandies and wines from many Portuguese wine regions. Mendes is still active here today, in an advisory capacity.

Due to its origin in Monçao, its first own "Quinta" was located in Vale do Minho in the Vinho Verde region. His whole passion is devoted to the Alvarinho grape variety, which is known as the most elegant white grape variety. In 1998 Anselmo Mendes produced his first wine - the "Muros de Melgaço Alvarinho". Since its first vintage, this first-class Vinho Verde has been awarded. year after year, with prizes from the Portuguese wine magazine "Revista dos Vinhos".

There is no doubt that Anselmo Mendes name is behind many a famous wine from the Vinho Verde region. His main focus is on the vineyard, as he believes that the quality of a wine is not decided in the cellar, but by the vines, their terroir and the knowledige and expertise of the winemaker. The fact that in recent years top quality white wines have reappeared on the market is certainly no coincidence, but rather the result of the work and development of Anselmo Mendes. This is not only due to the organisation in the vineyards, but also to a large extent to the respect for the authentic characteristics of each individual grape variety.
