Adega de Pegões - Spitzen Weingut in Peninsula de Setubal, Portugal
The Adega de Pegões winery was founded in 1958 and established a first-class name for itself in both the domestic and international markets.
The history of Adega de Pegões began when landowner and beer magnate José Rovisco Pais donated his property to Lisbon's public hospitals. On these lands, the regional government carried out a succesful colonization project, distributing land to thousands of agricultural workers and initiating the planting of 2900 acres of wine. These workers became known as "Colonos" because of this colonization project. On 7 March 1958, a cooperative was founded with the purpose of providing the "Colonos" with the necessary technical and logistical support. This was the birth of the first Pegões wines. In the beginning, the cooperative received financial and technical assistance from the state. However, with the Portuguese Revolution in 1974, the cooperative was taken over by the government, which was followed by difficult and uncertain times. The takeover was reversed after some time and over the last few years the cooperative has systematically pursued a strategy of modernisation, financial consolidation and continuous quality improvement of its wines.
The Pegões-Terroir is located between two nature reserves, the Tagus estuary in the northwest and the Sado in the southwest, on the eastern side of the Arrabida hills and the western side of the Alentejo province. This region is unique in its climate and soil conditions. The climate is Mediterranean. The sandy "Pliocenico de Pegões soil" was formed over a period of several million years by the sand transported and washed up by the rivers Tagus and Sado. It is precisely this combination of Mediterranean climate and sandy soil that produces the unique Pegões wines.
With winemaker Jaime Quendera, the winery produces an extensive portfolio of red, white and rosé wines, as well as a large variety of regional specialties such as Muscat wine, Eau de Vie (Water of Life) and sparkling wine. All the wines are top class and the success speaks for itself! With hundreds of domestic and international awards and recognitions, Adega de Pegões is without doubt on the podium of the best wineries in Portugal.
